Matanzas
Mi padre, Salvador Fernández Bertrán falleció el día 10 de febrero de 1985 en la
ciudad de Caracas. En Venezuela, en aquellos tiempos celebraba el día de la
juventud (10 de febrero). A su funeral asistieron representantes de los Scouts
de Venezuela, quienes llevaron el ataúd, también asistió el Padre Jean Cardon
(capellán Scout de los Scouts de Venezuela, Monseñor George Kahale (Iglesia
Melquita Católica San Jorge), el Shaykh de la Mezquita de Caracas, su mejor
amigo Ibrahim Yahia El-Hibri, y muchas amistades muy queridas.

My father, Salvador Fernández Bertrán, was born on October
7, 1922 in Matanzas, Cuba and died on February 10, 1985, day of the youth, in
Caracas, Venezuela. His funeral was attended by representatives from the Scouts
of Venezuela, who carried the coffin. Others in attendance
included Father Jean Cardon (Chaplain of the Scouts of Venezuela), Monsenor
George Kahale (San Jorge Catholic Church), Shaykh de la Mezquita of Caracas, his
best friend, Ibrahim Yahia El-Hibri, along with many other dear friends.

EL CONSEJO INTERAMERICANO DE ESCULTISMO Y LA OFICINA SCOUT INTERAMERICANA FUERON LA MAYOR CONTRIBUCIÓN A LA REGIÓN INTERAMERICANA DE SU FUNDADOR Y PRIMER SECRETARIO GENERAL EL CUBANO Ing. SALVADOR FERNÁNDEZ BELTRÁN
The Interamerican Scout Council and the Interamerican Scout Office were the biggest contribution to the Interamerican Region by the Founder and first Secretary General, Salvador Fernandez Bertran of Cuba.
El Ing. Salvador Fernández Beltrán, natural de Matanzas, Cuba recibió el Lobo de Bronce máxima condecoración del Movimiento Scout Mundial en 1957, siendo el diecisieteavo en recibirla, después de Lord Robert Baden-Powell, Jefe Scout del Mundo, que fue el primero en recibirla en al año 1935.
Salvador Fernandez Bertran, a native of Matanzas, Cuba, received the Bronze Wolf, the highest honor of the World Scout Movement in 1957. He was the 17th person to receive the honor after Lord Robert Baden Powell, founder of the Scouting movement, who received it in 1935.
El Ing. Salvador Fernández Beltrán fue el fundador y Secretario General del Consejo Interamericano de Escultismo y de la Oficina Scout Interamericana con sede en La Habana Cuba hasta 1961. Pasó a la Oficina Scout Mundial en Ginebra Suiza como Diputado del Secretario General hasta 1883.
Salvador Fernandez Bertran was the founder and Secretary General of the Interamerican Scout Council and the Interamerican Scout Office, located in Havana, Cuba until 1961. He moved on to the World Scout Office in Geneva, Switzerland as the Deputy Secretary General until 1983.

Señor Iván López,
Le agradezco inmensamente su carta electrónica. Sus palabras acerca de mi padre
me han verdaderamente emocionado, así como su fidelidad al escultismo. Tanto mi
esposo como yo valoramos las enseñanzas de Baden-Powell. El mundo estaría mejor
si las leyes scouts se aplicaran.
En cuanto a mi familia, como todos los que salimos de la isla, dimos algunos
tumbos por el mundo. Salimos vía Jamaica y después residimos algún tiempo en
ciudad de México, donde papa abrió la Oficina Scout Interamericana en la calle
de Panuco. Mas adelante, como usted sabe, fue invitado como director adjunto de
la Oficina Scout Mundial (Boy Scouts World Bureau) con sede en Ginebra. La
familia se trasladó a Ginebra en 1968. Después de unos
siete años mis padres se mudaron a Caracas (Venezuela).
Mi hermana, Beatriz, y yo nos quedamos a finalizar nuestros estudios en Suiza.
Mi hermana Beatriz se caso con un profesor suizo (Martín Lienhard) y yo regresé
a Caracas en 1978. Años más tarde
obtuve una beca para realizar mi doctorado en la universidad de Harvard. Poco
después obtuve otra beca y residí dos años en el Cairo.
Después de la muerte de papa (1985) regresé a Caracas
para acompañar a mi mama (Beatriz E. de Fernández) y mi abuela materna. Trabajé
en la Universidad Simón Bolívar en Caracas hasta el 2001, año
en que conocí a mi esposo. Desde entonces resido en los Estados Unidos.
Nuevamente deseo agradecerle el esfuerzo y dedicación en mantener viva la
imagen de los Scouts de Cuba. Con gusto contribuiré con lo que conservo
después de tantas mudanzas. La próxima semana viajamos a California y no podré
revisar los papeles y fotos que poseo. No le prometo enviárselo inmediatamente,
pero con gran gusto lo haré en el mes de febrero.
Con gran admiración por su esplendida labor, se despide de
usted.

Dear Mr. Iván López,
I greatly appreciate your email. Your kind words regarding my father and your love of Scouting have genuinely moved me. My husband and I value Baden Powell’s teachings. The world would be a much better place if the Scout Law was followed. My family, like many of the people who left the island, have been around the world. We left via Jamaica and later settled down in Mexico City, where father founded the Interamerican Scout Office on Panuco Street. Later on, as you know, he was named the Deputy Secretary General of the Boy Scout World Bureau in Geneva. My family moved to Geneva in 1968. After seven years, my parents moved to Venezuela. My sister, Beatriz, and I stayed in Switzerland to finish our studies. My sister married a Swiss professor (Martin Lienhard) and I returned to Caracas in 1978. Years later, I was awarded a scholarship to obtain my doctorate at Harvard. Shortly thereafter, I was awarded another scholarship to study in Cairo. After my father’s death in 1985 I returned to Caracas to take care of my mother and grandmother. I worked at the University of Simon Bolivar in Caracas until 2001, the year I met my husband. I now live in the United States.
I once again thank you and congratulate you for your work and dedication to maintaining alive the story of the Scouting movement in Cuba. With pleasure, I contribute what I’ve kept after many moves. I will send you what I have soon.
