DE JULIO DE 1927, DECLARADA INSTITUCIÓN OFICIAL DE LA REPUBLICA DE CUBA, MINISTERIO DE DEFENSA NACIONAL POR DECRETO NUM. 871 DE 22 DE JUNIO DE 1927 Y RATIFICADA POR LEY-DECRETO NUM. 1743 DE 28 DE OCTUBRE DE 1954. SUSPENDIDA INDEFINIDAMENTE POR LA ASAMBLEA SCOUT MUNDIAL, REUNIDA EN LISBOA PORTUGAL EN SEPTIEMBRE DE 1961.

THE CUBAN SCOUT ASSOCIATION WAS DECLARED AN OFFICIAL INSTITUTION OF THE REPUBLIC OF CUBA, WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT O DEFENSE BY DECREE NO. 871, 22 OF JUNE 1927 AND RATIFIED BY LAW DECREE NUM. 1743, 28 OF OCTOBER 1954. A CUARENTA Y SEIS AÑOS DE MI ULTIMO CHAPUZÓN EN EL RÍO MAYABEQUE

Cuarenta años son dos generaciones y no es cosa de juegos, especialmente cuando uno sale de su país y espera volver a los dos meses. Hace cuarenta y seis años un 5 de abril de 1962, en la víspera de mi partida de Güines hacia Miami, me encaminé hacia el Local de Grupo en el paso del río y me di un chapuzón en el Compartidor General del río Mayabeque. No era una partida que estuviera en mis planes, la lucha fraticida entre las facciones opuestas entre si aconsejaban la salida del país hasta la solución del conflicto. Atrás quedaba todo; mis padres, el local de Grupo que había construido con mis manos, mi Güines. La llegada a Miami, a aquel Miami de principios de los sesenta, no fue nada fácil para un refugee. No había trabajos y la poca ayuda del refugio no alcanzaba para nada. La única opción era ser localizado fuera de Miami y a Nueva York marché en menos de dos meses con un pasaje aéreo, $5.00 y veinte libras de menos de peso. No puedo contar la historia de esos cuarenta años, de mis triunfos y de mis derrotas, pero cuando saco el balance doy Gracias a Dios por lo bueno y por lo malo y por haberme permitido permanecer fiel a mis principios Scouts, fundar una familia, de la cual me enorgullezco, y tener la dicha de haberlo hecho en un gran país, a quien le agradezco todo lo que tengo. Reflexionando, después de estos cuarenta años solamente puedo aceptar la voluntad de Dios e ignorar la terrible dimensión que ha alcanzado la lucha entre las facciones opuestas entre si que llevaron a la Asociación de Scouts de Cuba a involucrarse en una lucha fraticida "de una manera deformada", consecuencias que se están pagando cuarenta años después. Por mi parte solamente ruego a mi Dios permita volver la paz a nuestra querida Cuba y pueda renacer la Asociación de Scouts de Cuba, siendo mi único propósito el de ofrecer a las futuras generaciones un vinculo con la historia de los Scouts de Cuba

Forty-six years after my last dip in the Mayabeque River

Forty years make up two generations, and that's no joke. Especially when you leave your country, expecting to return in a few short months. Forty-six years ago, one April 5, 1962, on the eve of my journey from Güines to Miami, I hopped on my bicycle and traveled the road to my Scout Group's hut on the riverbank and I took a dip in the Mayabeque River. I wasn't planning on leaving my country, but the conflict between warring factions made leaving the only sensible option, at least until the conflict was brought to a peaceful resolution. I left everything behind; my parents, the Scout hut I built with my own hands, my Güines. Those first few days in the Miami of the early 1960's were not easy for a "refugee." There were no jobs and the little assistance that was available was insufficient. It became apparent that the only option was to leave Miami, and so only two months after arriving, I moved to New York with only an plane ticket, $5 in my pocket and 20 pounds underweight. I can't tell the entire story of those 46 years, of all my successes and failures, but when I step back and look at my life, I thank God for the good and the bad. For allowing me to stay true to my Scouting values, raise my family (of which I'm very proud) and to do it all in a truly great nation, to whom I owe everything I have. When I look back with the perspective that only 46 years can give you, I can only accept God's will and ignore the bitter conflict that has pitted two groups with opposing views against one another, a conflict that has had terrible consequences that are still being felt fifty years later. For my part, I only pray to God that one day peace return to our beloved Cuba and that the Cuban Scout Association can be active once again. It is my purpose, and the purpose of this site, to offer the future generations of Cuban scouts a history that they can build on.
